• TLINGIT TRIBAL DESIGN BY NAHAAN
The Chilkat gi design represents at it's very core, unity among people. People are like fabric within a community, together they can form into something useful, apart they are just pieces of fabric. It has a very deep representation as stated by Nahaan, the artist: "This is a Chilkat design telling the story of how our people used to cut apart entire chilkat robes and give them away at k̲oo.éex' or potlatches. It was one of the highest gestures of wealth when given away. The different pieces would be received by guests of honor and fashioned together to create vests, leggings, headbands etc. The design style is called chilkat because of its initial and primary presence in the village of Klukwan and Chilkat River area.
"The Chilkat Weaving Technique is one of the most complex and exquisite forms of weaving known throughout what is now called North America. It was introduced to The Tlingit via inter-marriage with the Tsimshian tribe."
